Visit Powell's Books in Portland, OR

Powell's City of Books, West Burnside Street, Portland, OR, USA

I had some time to kill in Portland before going to see a concert, so I decided to check out Powells since it was only a few blocks from the venue. When I first walked in I wasn't very impressed. It felt very commercialized (at least to me) in many parts of the store. The store is really big with many different floors and rooms. They had every kind of genre for books you can think of, if you can't find the book your looking for I would be shocked! Overall I enjoyed my visit, but if you aren't a reader or book lover it is something you can pass on while visiting Portland.  I didn't buy anything (which I kind of regret) but I know I will be back again since I only live 3 hours away!!

Powell's Books is a chain of bookstores in PortlandOregon, and its surrounding metropolitan area. Powell's headquarters, dubbed Powell's City of Books, claims to be the largest independent new and used bookstore in the world. Powell's City of Books is located in the Pearl District on the edge of downtown and occupies a full city blockbetween NW 10th and 11th Avenues and between W. Burnside and NW Couch Streets. It contains over 68,000 square feet (6,300 m2), about 1.6 acres of retail floor space. CNN rates it one of the "coolest" bookstores in the world.

The City of Books has nine color-coded rooms and over 3,500 different sections.

The inventory for its retail and online sales is over four million new, used, rare, and out-of-print books. Powell's buys around 3,000 used books a day
