The best 10 mins of my life!!

I have always wanted to Skydive since I was a lil kid. Ok! That’s exaggeration :P. Anywho, so I asked my astrologer and October 12, 2015 would be the most auspicious & the safest day he said. So here I was at West Creek for the most awaited experience of my life.

With full excitement and surprisingly no fear, I reached at the airport where I met Joe D my tandem, who looked like an older version of Tom Cruise from Top Gun in his Camouflage onesie. Just then I knew I can be rest assured and put my life in his hands. He was the most important person in my life for that moment, he was going to push me out of the plane from 10K feet and not let me die. We completed a few processes like signing an agreement that I would not sue the company in the event of my death n blah blah, checked my weight, got into a dorky looking jumpsuit and started walking towards the aircraft. Man! This feeling was amazing, I could hear Top Gun theme as I walked in slow motion towards the aircraft.

And as I got into the aircraft, all the excitement now turned into fear as I saw the insides of the plane stuck together with duct tape, now the sound from the aircraft didn’t seem to be normal. So now instead of enjoying the view from the top I was wondering when was this aircraft last inspected. By the time I reached skydiving height I wanted to jump out for the safety of a parachute.

So we got ready for the jump, I said my prayers, sat near the aircraft door and boom! In no time, we were somersaulting in the air, feeling wind in my hair, trying to hold still, me trying hard to keep up a smile for the camera, giving thumps up. *Ughh* That camera is such a distraction to enjoying the view. The ground was getting closer and closer, from 10k to 6K feet was covered in 22 secs at 120mph, that’s the bestest part of freefall.

Then the parachute opens and finally I get to admire the spectacular view. I was counting my blessings, thinking about my loving family Aai, Pappa, Durga, Smita, Sunit, Suyash, Shreyas amazing friends Asha, Cripa, Shweta, thanking God and that’s when my instructor taps me and reminds me what he told me about landing. And in 3…2…1… touch down! And that’s that my friends, no one asked me to describe my jump but I still did it :P coz I really want you to experience this exhilaration atleast once in your life. Go skydive!!

I am terrified of heights. TERRIFIED. So I decided I needed to overcome my phobia by the most extreme means possible- by throwing myself out of a plane!

So when I started at Uni, I decided to join the Skydiving Club and sign up for a training course. In Feb 2006, I went to the North West Parachute Centre in the Lake District (UK) and did a RAPS static line training course. Then I boarded the PAC, flew to 3,500ft and somehow, managed to sit myself in the door of a moving aeroplane before pushing off and FALLING OUT OF A PLANE.

Adrenaline, terror, excitement, exhileration- crazy combo of everything and anything, it was absolutely INCREDIBLE. Biggest rush of my entire life.

Well, after that? I was hooked. I went straight back up for my second jump. From there, I took over as President of the Skydiving Club, I worked my way towards my A Licence and my Formation Skydiving1 qualification, doing 50+ jumps and travelling abroad to make the most of better weather for jumping. I was a freefall skydiver jumping from 14,500ft and I loved loved loved it.

I haven't jumped since having my son in 2008, but I do dream of going back to it one day.

Best feeling in the world.

This video is me undertaking a FS skydive with my coach Stu in 2007. This is my 36th? jump, and based on this jump, Stu put me in to do my FS1. I got it the following day.

I am proud to say that in November 2011 I skydived from 12,000 feet with my boyfriend. It was the most amazing thing I have ever done in my life. There's no explaining the feeling you get when you're falling through the air at that speed. It's the scariest, craziest most amazing experience and I would recommend it to everyone. And to make this experience even better I am very pleased to say that we raised over £1000 for St Odwald's Hospice. This should be a goal on everyones bucket list!
