Chobe National Park, Botswana 2011. I saw a lion tucking into a baby elephant. Sleeping underneath the stars was amazing

10 days on safari in Kenya, followed by 10 days in Zanzibar with my sisters and my mom. We were lucky enough to see all the big five, and had an experience of a lifetime.

I went on safari for my honeymoon in September 2011.  We visited Tanzania and Zanzibar.  The park was the Selous park, one of the biggest in Tanzania.  We had to take a really small plane from the Tanzanian capital to the safari landing strip - I say landing strip, it was basically a large area of dirt! The plane was terrifying and I was very relieved when we landed!

As we were met by our tour guide to go to the hotel he gave us an orange/mango drink (still not quite sure what it was) and loaded up the car.  We drove through the small village which was very insightful, children chased the car waving at us and many villagers stared.

On our first trip we were surprised that it wasn't safari as you see on telly - the land rover was open i.e. no windows and there was not a man with a tranquilizer gun in case a lion came too close! That made for a scary first day but we eventually relaxed a bit.  We saw most of the animals you would expect - elephants, lions (including a lioness feeding her cubs!), zebras, giraffes, warthogs, crocodiles, exotic birds, widerbeasts and impala.  Unfortunately we didn't get to see rhinos, hyenas or cheetahs.  Neither did we spot the leopard that lived close to the camp we were staying at!

It was an amazing experience, one I'd love to do again but it's quite costly to make a habit of!!
