Went to see an opera in Budapest - it was actually the main reason for going - and to see old friends, of course.

I saw Turandot - which I wanted to see for a loong time!

We had alot of fun and felt super mature and sophisticated.  But it was nothing like we expected.

We were hoping for the classic opera that you see in movies, with the big italian guy with dark curly hair singing in another language in his deep tenor voice. With th big lady in the crazy gown and outrageous hat.

But it was in english. With normal young skinny people. And it was more like a comedic play, rather than an intense opera. They just sang everything in that opera-like voice.

Would still like to see a REAL opera, in Italy maybe?

Puccini's 'Madame Butterfly' is coming to the local corn exchange, but I would like to do it properly. I've mentioned it as a possible birthday present to my brother. I think it will need to be one where I like the music though!

Went to see Lohengrin...it's over 4 hours long.  Everyone died...and after 4 hours I shouted YEA!  They can't sing if they're dead.  The opera was written in the 1800's (?) but this production was in 1956.  (sigh).   So instead of cool knights in armour and ornate gowns, I got drab army uniforms and women in suits.  Okay that's the bad.  The good, I may go see an Italian opera, sit in the main section and make sure it is a short one!
