A lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly behind the Earth into its umbra (shadow). This can occur only when the sun, Earth, and moon are aligned (in "syzygy") exactly, or very closely so, with the Earth in the middle. Hence, a lunar eclipse can occur only the night of a full moon. The type and length of an eclipse depend upon the Moon's location relative to its orbital nodes.
A total lunar eclipse has the direct sunlight completely blocked by the earth's shadow. The only light seen is refracted through the earth's shadow. This light looks red for the same reason that the sunset looks red, due to rayleigh scattering of the more blue light. Because of its reddish color, a total lunar eclipse is sometimes called a blood moon.
Unlike a solar eclipse, which can be viewed only from a certain relatively small area of the world, a lunar eclipse may be viewed from anywhere on the night side of the Earth. A lunar eclipse lasts for a few hours, whereas a total solar eclipse lasts for only a few minutes at any given place, due to the smaller size of the Moon's shadow. Also unlike solar eclipses, lunar eclipses are safe to view without any eye protection or special precautions, as they are dimmer than the full moon.
Got to see not only a full lunar eclipse, but a supermoon lunar eclipse, resulting in a "blood moon". The total lunar eclipse happened to coincide with a 'supermoon', meaning the moon is at its closest point to Earth during its orbit, and therefore appears 14% bigger and brighter than usual. Pairing this with a complete lunar eclipse meant the occurrence of a 'blood moon", or a reddish tinted moon during the eclipse. I went out on the back deck around 8:30 to watch the Earth's shadow begin to move across the moon, and watched until about 9:45, when the moon was completely covered.
The eclipse began while I was walking home. I stood on the sidewalk looking up at the night sky until it passed. It was a beautiful and calming moment, one that seems to put life into perspective. One day I would love to see this through a telescope, so I can really appreciate the beauty of the details. On the bucket list it goes!
I was watching the lunar eclipse with Brandon in the backyard (piggy-back style using a blanket to hold him securly to me) and while we were watching a plane fly across the night sky we spotted a shooting star... immediately we make wishes, but don't tell each other our wishes. A few minutes later, we're talking about our wishes coming true, and Brandon says "I think mine will come true. It's just a little one." We talk a little more, and I tell him mine was small too, and I hoped it would come true. He says, "I think mine will come true real soon. In just a little bit maybe." I said "oh, that's great. I'm so glad you got to make a wish." I squeezed him really tight and he says "there it is..." and I said "aww, Bubbas I love you!" and kissed his little arms. Then he said "My wish just came true." I said "It did?!?! What was your wish?" and he said "I just wished for love."
