Went to Peru and Bolivia in the summer of 2013.  Amazing countries with great cultures, I highly recommend going there in your life!  Waking up early in the morning for the fog was worth it

Its as incredible as everyone says.  There are thousands of people up there everyday and the queue just to get the bus from Aguas Caliente is a long one, but it's worth the wait and while you might never get a photo without people in it the views are still as epic.  I went in the afternoon.  Initially I was disappointed not to get a morning ticket but watching the sunset over Machu Picchu was something else.

It's as amazing as everyone says.  Magical.  Once upon a time I wanted to do the Inca trail but with less time up my sleeve, I opted for the faster, easier option which was to bus from Cusco to Ollantaytambo, then the train from there to Aguas Caliente (stunning views) and then buy a return trip for the bus that takes you up the winding, steep road to Machu Picchu.  There is so much walking to be done up there and you only have 5 hours.  You can now only buy a morning (most popular) of afternoon pass for the park and these need to be purchased in advance (a few days ahead is okay from the Machu Picchu ticket office in Cusco) near the Chocolate musuem. Train tickets can be booked online with either Peru or Inca (more expensive) rail (book weeks ahead).  Expect there to be a long queue for the buses in Aguas Caliente at both times.  To make the most of your time in the park you might need to start queuing up to 2 hours before the entry time on your Machu Picchu ticket as the ride up the hill also takes about 45 minutes.  Take plenty of water and food, sunscreen and clothing for all weather.  Temperatures can be very hot or cold, dry or wet and there is very little shelter in the park itself.  Max your camera battery as every view is epic!!  And there's always the opportunity for a relaxing soak in Aquas terminales if your feet will carry you the 10 minute walk up the hill, along the path into the forest to get there.

The climb of the Hyuanu Picchu was more amazing than the tourist-filled Machu Picchu, although the view of the Inca complex from above did recover mood and opinion about Machu Picchu a lot.

Visit Macchu Picchu is an incredible experience, the nice views, to analyze how they live, try to imagine how they live and try to identify how they build that incredible marvelous city are some important aspects that I suggest you consider if you decide to visit that city.

With my friend Grace, we completed a 5 day Salkantay trek to Machu Picchu in July 2010.  One of the best experiences ever!

After a bit more than three weeks in Peru (and a couple of days in Bolivia), I finally ended up... there! Machu Picchu. I also had the chance to visit a couple of other ruins in the days before, but nothing was as stunning as this one. Regardless of the large amount of tourists you'll see there (remember, you're a tourist too!), there's not denying that this is a place to see before kicking the bucket.

This was probably the most beautiful sight we experienced on our 'Round the World trip over 9 months to 24 countries and 85 cities. Pictures do not do it justice. It is a "MUST" on your bucket list. The experience of riding the train into the town just below Machu Picchu, riding the bus up and spending the entire day there will be unforgetable.
