I have sat in a few empty churches before but usually got in since there was some type of event going on at the time. Although this would mean the church wasn't actually empty in its entirety, the sanctuary was and so I was able to absorb the beautiful silence that fills such times.
The most interesting empty church I sat in was a small one in North Lawrence named Centenary United Methodist due to the shape of the church itself. The event that got me in was the Festival of Nativities, which was set-up in every other room but the sanctuary in 2015. This allowed me to sit in the sanctuary to enjoy the silence and admire the design of the room.
The most recent one and the one from which the pictures were taken is the First Baptist Church, which is celebrating 150 years since its start in 1869. At the time our family group was taking down the decorations and cleaning up the church after a marriage while I just took the time to get out from under everyone else's feet and get some me-time by escaping to the sanctuary where I could admire once more the beautiful details of an another old church.
