The film The Beach catapulted Thailand to the forefront of backpacker mythology. This wasn't necessarily a good thing.
The iconic beach of the film was filmed at Koh Phi Phi Leh’s Maya Bay – a broken circle of crystal-clear waters surrounded by high vertical rocky cliffs.
It is beautiful, however, it is also hideously busy and exploited.
The beach is crammed with hundreds of tourists, all vying for the ideal picture postcard snap of white sand and turquoise sea.
