Many times during this 6hr hike, we asked ourselves WHY?! It was a punishing trek up steep and treacherous lava flow paths. After ascending 1.6km in 8km, we were rewarded with a glimpse of creation - a loud, smelly, fiery cauldron of molten earth dancing within itself. It coloured the night sky red and gave off huge clouds of steam. We spent the night in one of the summit shelters, and the next day picked our way back down trying to minimise knee damage. With: Kris
WHY: because it's awe-inspiring.
