Folders are the handiest knives around because they can always simply sit in a pocket, waiting to be used. Sheath knives are handier only if you carry a sheath knife on your person all the time, and the majority of us can refrain from doing that. For some ludicrous factor, even some wilderness areas do not permit bring of a sheath knife, while folders are allowable nearly everywhere. Everybody should carry a penknife in or clipped to their pocket when in the wilderness (or really, all the time).

Excellent folders can range from a small Case Peanut to a Strider and everything between. Any size can be beneficial, however the tiniest most likely will not be quite appropriate in the field for the majority of people. If a bigger knife is brought too, then any swiss army knife need to do. Swiss Army knives are some of the most popular designs for the outdoors and for good reason. Victorinox and Wenger are the very best known brands, but all the widely known models are made by Victorinox. The alox-handled models and the bigger designs are the most popular amongst outdoorsmen. The Leader Harvester and the Farmer are excellent choices in the smaller sized alox designs. Both have a good blade and a saw, which are the most crucial alternatives for the woods. Amongst the bigger models, the Rucksack, the Trekker, and the Forester are fantastic options. All have a bigger blade and saw, making them better than the smaller designs if utilized as the basic usage knife. Pretty much all Victorinox designs are terrific quality, but those called are some of the very best for the outdoors.

Standard folder types such as the stockman, trapper, copperhead, peanut, and congress are also great choices. The stockman and the trapper are the favorites among these for wilderness use, but all are good. Case, GEC, Boker, and Queen are some companies that make outstanding traditional knives. If cooking knives are needed, take a look at Rough Rider and Steel Warrior. Neither of these business make knives as good as the others pointed out, but they are very inexpensive and decent quality.

For a more modern "tactical" design, Benchmade, Spyderco, Cold Steel, and Kershaw make low-cost to moderately costly, but exceptional quality, knives. Benchmade is the top of the line as far as these knives go. Their Griptilian is a remarkable knife at a little under $100. Mine did everything that I wanted it to do, up until I lost it. The Rukus is a substantial folder that was recently discontinued, however a terrific knife. Spyderco also makes great knives. The Delica and Endura are the most popular and best known. The Spyderco Tenacious is a Chines-made knife that is getting an excellent credibility for a working knife. Kershaw and Cold Steel make slightly cheaper knives, and Kershaw in particular has an excellent credibility. The Kershaw Tyrade is an outstanding knife if you can get it, and the Junkyard Canine II, Needs Work, and Skyline designs are also excellent.

A folder should not be your only alternative if possible, but several need to certainly become part of any outdoor set!
