I had a Chinese coworker who I was helping out with English-speaking so as a result he asked my boyfriend and I to join him for the Chinese New Year - the Year of the Rooster. We agreed so met him at a restaurant that he suggested.
They gave us a small gift packet that had one of those flimsy plastic fish that rolls up in your palm and a gift coupon from the restaurant. From there we allowed our host to choose the food although we did request one non-Chinese entry since my boyfriend doesn't like Chinese pretty much.
What made this so interesting to me was the actual way we ate. I know that Chinese is served in such large helpings for one person but I didn't know that it was suppose to be taken as a family meal, which is how we did it. All the food came to the table at once then my host ended up serving the food on plates that were passed over to us.
The food was delicious and I wish I knew the name of one dish that was like a beef stew without having too much liquid. Unfortunately the ordering had been done in Chinese while I never got around to asking for the name so that is my loss.
But my whole takeover, though, is I really like the concept of a shared meal where everyone is sharing everything and if I ever do Chinese again with a group I would like to see if they would be willing to participate in this custom.
