This was my a bonus unexpected bucketlist item for me today and one I am so glad I was able to take off my list finally. Longhorns are such beautiful creatures and they are so colorfully unique even from each other while I just love them.
They just seem so rare although occasionally I will see them in the fields around Lawrence or on the way to somewhere else when we travel. And they are never close enough to grab a picture of every single time. But today that changed for at Ad Astra Alpacas they were renting their pastures out to a neighbor who had a mix herd of longhorn and Angus while fortunately that pasture was right on the road with a pull-off for the gate.
I did learn that it is tricky though to get a shot of the critter as the closest one I wanted raised his head to look at me when we pulled in but dropped it into the tall grass when I got out to angle the camera just right. There was another one a bit further back who was looking at me so I chose to snap him instead but then I had some Angus bulls photobomb my shot.
By this time I ended up choosing to step just a bit nearer while my steer finally raised his head. Snap and we were back off for home.
