I really wanted to try surfing whilst in Byron Bay and so we called Gaz at Style Surfing School for a half day lesson. It was raining so the group was really small which was perfect.
We firstly learnt on the beach how to pop up on the board to standing in 4 easy moves - then it was straight into the water.
The surfing part was actually a lot of fun and I even managed to stand up on my first wave! However it went down hill from there as the waves and wind were really strong and I spent ages every time battling just to get my surf board out into the bay where Gaz was waiting, therefore before I even had chance of trying to stand up and surf I was so exhausted I had no energy left. Sometimes I couldn't get the board out at all and Gaz would come back to the beach and make me lay down on the board and pull me out into the water calling it my taxi - was quite embarrassing but Gaz was great.
I really did enjoy the experience and am so glad I can say that I surfed in Byron Bay. I would like to try surfing again one day but I'll wait for the waves to be a little calmer and for a little less wind!
