Again I am guessing at the exact date, but I know it was in September 1990 and at the time I was sitting on a low wall outside the Palace of Versailles in France.

I was eighteen years old and this was my first trip outside of Australia.  My sister and I were on a arts tour with our high school for a month travelling through Europe.  86 students and about 10 teachers /chaperones loose on the European continent where the drinking age is around 14-16 depending on the country you are in.  You can imagine ... my sister was an 11th grade student and I was officially a chaperone as I had graduated from high school the year before and taken a year off before going to University.

So we had visited the Palace of Versailles and my sister had wanted to use the bathroom.  I was waiting outside because in many parts of France you not only have to pay to use the bathroom, but you also have to pay to enter the bathroom.  I wasn't about to do that.

There was a low wall running parallel to the building to I sat there.  I was just sitting there minding my own business when a man in his 30s came up to me and said "Alexandra?"  I looked around expecting to see someone behind me that he might be talking to, after all I had no recollection of meeting this man in my life, and I was halfway around the world from home, so surely he couldn't be talking to me?

For a second I thought it might have been some kind of ruse, we had heard so many warning tales about pickpockets and what not in Europe, so my initial reaction was that it was a trick.

So I didn't say anything.

He said it again, and this time used my last name ... I was like "Yes?"

Turns out this guy had lived next door to me on Cooinbil Crescent in Wagga Wagga - my parents moved out of that house when I was FIVE YEARS OLD and he hadn't seen me since.  But here, many thousands of miles away at a completely random place he had recognized me thirteen years later.

Probably one of the weirdest experiences of my life!
